Promising line IR77954-28-36-3 was first developed at the International Rice Research Institute in 1998. Selection and backcrossing were conducted at Ubon Ratchathani Rice Research Center during 1999-2004. Evaluation for yield potential and environmental adaptation was carried out in the upper northern region during 2005-2012. Results from experimental fields in research centers showed that this line gave average grain yield of 12-22% higher than KDML105, flowering date ranging from 11-24 October, 107-172 centimeter height, resistance to blast disease, good response to nitrogen fertilizer, and cooking quality similar to KDML105. The non-glutinous rainfed rice promising line IR77954-28-36-3 was first cross at the International Rice Research Institute in 1998. Selected and back cross at Ubon Ratchathani Rice Research Center between 1999-2004. Evaluated yield potential and environmental adaptation in the Upper North between 2005-2012. Average grain yield was 12-22% higher than KDML105 in research centers, flowering date between 12-22 October, 117-162 centimeter height, good perform in farmer fields, resistance to blast disease in seedling stage. Good response to nitrogen fertilizer, physical chemical and cooking quality like KDML105. Adopted by farmers and consumers in the activity of preference analysis by farmer participatory rice varieties selection.

Growing rice in dry season in the upper northern region is depend upon two significant factors including, the varietal acceptance which high yield, disease and insect resistance and high market demand. The program on research and development of irrigated rice in the upper northern region has carried out the project and developed the new rice promising line, namely PRE02008-CRI-18-2-1-1 which is glutinous rice and insensitive to photoperiod. This line was obtained from single cross, PRE93001-8-1-2-1-1/ PRE1. Rice Gall midge (Orseolia oryzae (Wood-Mason)) is a major problem in the upper Northern part, a glutinous rice line PRE04012-20-1-1-1 was derived from a single cross between Sahm Samai and PRE96011-SPT-1-2-2-1-1 since 2004. The farmer field trials had tested in 2011-2013. In wet season, high potential yield was 1,043 kg/rai while the average yield was 703 kg/rai which was non significant different from 710 kg/rai of RD14 and 704 kg/rai of SPT1. In dry season, the high potential yield was 916 kg/rai while the average yield of PRE04012-20-1-1-1 and SPT1 were 714 kg/rai, but lower than RD14 (759 kg/rai) by 6 percent. Survey of rice stored pest in The Upper Northern part of Thailand was done in 3 agricultural cooperatives (Nongmuongkai, Maejai and Chiangsaen) using food trap during December 2011 – November 2012. The results showed that 25 stored rice insect pest were found (18 important insect pests and 7 natural enemies). At Nongmoungkai, the important insect pests were Liposcelis spp., Lophocateres pusillus, Sitophillus oryzae and Ceyptolestes pusillus were found with the survey number of 2, 206, 580, 365 and 108 respectively. Some parts of an irrigated area in the upper northern region, rice cultivation will be done in both dry and wet seasons. Glutinous rice varieties are still preferable for farmers due to high yield and suitability for people’s cultural consumption. To enhance the growth of rice production, the researchers of Rice Research Center in the region have been conducted the research and development on rice varietals improvement continuously to gain the desirable new varieties. Rice gall midge (GM) is an important insect pest in the upper north of Thailand i.e. Tak, Phrae, Lampang, Nan, Phayao, Mae Hong Son, Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai provinces. Severe infestations generally occur during September to October. Prior to this study, only MN62M and RD4, the two glutinous rice varieties were recommended as resistant ones. Tagosodes pusanus (Distant) is one of the planthopper species, which has been reported as a minor insect pest in Thailand in 2000. The morphology of T. pusanus closely resembles the whitebacked planthopper, Sogatella furcifera (Horvath). However, it could be distinguished by the pattern of the dark markers of its forewings, pale yellow pronotum in the middle of the segment, color of the clypeus, and shapes and number of spines of aedeagus. The population dynamic of T. pusanus was studied by sampling in the rice fields using D-vac and Blower-vac sucking machines.
